The Magic Theatre in San Francisco is currently presenting the Bay Area premiere of the stage comedy “Bad Jews” by Joshua Harmon. Directed by Ryan Guzzo Purcell, the production runs through Oct. 5.
“Bad Jews” tells the story of four Jewish cousins who argue about the religious-secular divide. The play grapples with questions of assimilation and tradition. In a review of the debut run at New York’s Roundabout Theatre, the New York Times called the play “delectably savage … the best comedy of the season.”
Said Harmon of his play’s themes, “If you’re a young Jewish person who’s engaged at all with your religion, you’ve met people from all sides of the spectrum. You’ve met people who are incredibly invested in it, people who are incredibly dismissive of it and everything in between.”
