Erich Levy
Erich Levy, 91, former resident of Goldman Plaza, passed Feb. 12, 2015. Parents were Siegfried and Nanny Levy, survivors 1938 Germany. At 13 came to beloved San Francisco. Battle of Bulge Purple Heart recipient, worked entire career as U.S. Army civilian. Longtime member and usher at Temple Emanu-El. Predeceased by Irma Volpe, sister. Erich loved movies and the symphony. Adored his nephews, Bill and Michael Volpe and families. Erich was a quiet man, but if he hugged you, you knew it.
Roschelle Zella Paul Weiman
Weiman, Roschelle Zella Paul, died Feb. 14, 2015, at age 93. Born in Eureka, California. Bachelor and master’s degrees in music from University of California at Berkeley, where she led Glee Club and other music groups. Preceded in death by her devoted husband of 65 years, William Weiman. She worked alongside her husband at Dessel’s Pharmacy at Ninth and Irving in San Francisco for 23 years.
The next phase of their careers was devoted to her performing as a singer-songwriter in both San Francisco and New York. Famed San Francisco columnist Herb Caen saluted her when she began playing at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York on Cole Porter’s piano. San Francisco music critic Phil Elwood wrote, “Roschelle Paul writes superb songs …her lyrics are finely honed … she plays a remarkably sophisticated piano.” Mother of David Michael Weiman (Nancy) and Helene Sharon Shapiro. Loving grandmother of Abram Shapiro (Karen), Miriam Shapiro, Adam Shapiro and Aaron Weiman (Hsin-Yi Tsai), great-grandmother of Ari and Maya.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in her memory to San Francisco Food Bank or your favorite charity. Services were held at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park, Colma.
