Mazon — the word means food in Hebrew — raises funds principally from Jews nationwide who donate a suggested amount of 3 percent of the cost of weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and other joyous events. Other funds come from annual Passover and High Holy Days appeals and from commemorative contributions. At the end of 1997, Mazon received more than 40,000 individual contributions.
