The state Senate has approved a resolution recognizing May as Jewish American Heritage Month, and an exhibit on the state’s Jewish heritage opened May 15 in the Capitol rotunda.
Introduced by a group including state Sen. Marty Block, chair of the 15-month-old California Legislative Jewish Caucus, and 12 other senators including Sen. Mark Leno, the resolution commends Jewish Americans for their accomplishments and outstanding service to the state and nation. The Senate approved the resolution on May 4, and the Assembly was expected to approve it as well.
The exhibit includes historic photos and notes about California’s Jewish heritage. It will be on display through the end of the month.
In addition, Jewish heritage month was observed at San Francisco City Hall on May 20, and a San Jose event on May 12 included a flag-raising, a kosher lunch and music by the Lior Ben-Hur band and students from Yavneh Day School in Los Gatos. San Jose continues celebrating from 3 to 5 p.m. May 31 at the City Hall Plaza with a return musical appearance by Lior Ben-Hur and a couple of food trucks. The event is free.
