IfNotNow members march down Market Street in a High Holy Days protest

Continuing its campaign of marking major Jewish holidays with protests, a group calling upon the U.S. Jewish community to end its support for Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories held a march and demonstration in San Francisco on Oct. 9.

IfNotNow, an American Jewish group formed in the summer of 2014 in response to Israel’s war with Gaza, led the march of about 70 people down Market Street to a demonstration in front of the S.F-based Jewish Community Federation.

IfNotNow said it chose the week between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to reflect on the occupation and to repent for the U.S. Jewish community’s support for it. The group held a “Liberation Seder” outside the Berkeley offices of the Jewish Federation of the East Bay during Passover earlier this year.

“As we welcome the High Holidays, we must heed the call of the shofar to awaken our community’s soul and to end its support for the occupation,” said Jeremy Oziel, an IfNotNow Bay Area leader.
