The American Israel Public Affairs Committee canceled Ari Shavit’s participation in its events after two women accused the Israeli journalist of sexual assault.
A planned Nov. 10 event in San Francisco featuring Shavit was canceled by co-sponsors AIPAC and the S.F.-based Jewish Community Relations Council, both organizations told J. on Oct. 28.
The first allegation against Shavit came in an Oct. 19 article in the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles by reporter Danielle Berrin, who wrote that Shavit sexually assaulted her during a 2014 interview. A second assault allegation, by an unidentified staff member at the dovish pro-Israel lobby J Street, was reported Oct. 30 in the Forward.
Shavit announced he was temporarily leaving journalism due to the allegations.
AIPAC is one of several major Jewish organizations to drop Shavit following the allegations. Hillel International, the campus Jewish group, suspended a campus speaking tour by Shavit last week. J Street told the Forward that, since the accusation by its staffer in 2014, the organization has not invited Shavit to speak at its events. — jta & j. staff
