Maggid Jonathan Furst, of San Francisco’s Kneset HaLev, was among the Bay Area Jews downtown Nov. 15 for International Standing Rock Solidarity Day — part of a day of national action to support the Lakota Sioux tribe’s efforts to halt construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota, which opponents say would threaten the drinking water of an estimated 10 million people.
Nearly 4,000 people gathered at sunrise at Civic Center Plaza and marched to the entrance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers building on Market Street, where they blocked the street until about 11 a.m. More than 300 protests against the pipeline took place worldwide, according to the Indigenous Environmental Network.
