Chapman was a community leader who worked for Jewish continuity and women’s rights. She served as president of JCF’s Women’s Alliance, on the board of the Jewish Bulletin of Northern California, and as chair of the Jewish Community Relations Council.
The Judith Chapman Memorial Women’s Leadership Fund was created in her memory to honor and assist women who reflect her ideals, values and commitment. A permanent component of the JCF’s Jewish Community Endowment Fund, it will be used to make grants toward Jewish projects at home and abroad that encourage achievement by women, and to provide future leadership training programs.
In addition, an annual award to a woman who exemplifies significant and sustained volunteer leadership in the Jewish community will be made each year, beginning in spring, 1999.
Lipstadt is a frequent commentator on contemporary Jewish life. Her latest book, “Denying the Holocaust,” received front-page reviews in both the Washington Post and the New York Times and was included by the latter in its list of notable books.
