That statement occurred a day after Syrian Ambassador to the United States Walid Mualem told CNN that Damascus is interested in resuming negotiations with whatever government emerges after the Israeli election.
President Clinton heard nothing from Syrian President Hafez Assad during their brief exchange in Amman about a resumption of talks, the U.S. official said.
“I don’t think anything’s going to happen soon,” the official said. “We’d like them to. We’ve made our view known to them for quite some time but they haven’t responded.”
