Times are hard. Every day newspapers are filled with reports of another company downsizing or going out of business, another city where office space is going begging, another family suddenly beset by unemployment or worse.

Amid a troubled economy, the world is in crisis and Israel is under siege. But instead of wringing our hands, there’s much we can do to change that grim picture, starting right here in our own community.

Sunday, volunteers from the Jewish federations in the East Bay and in San Francisco will be calling you. We need you to give generously because it really is a matter of survival.

Here in the Bay Area, Jewish social service agencies, community centers and other organizations are feeling strapped. High unemployment and declining wages have led to declining revenues, along with decreased federal and state aid.

Unfortunately, the need for services has not declined. It has risen. The events of Sept. 11, coupled with unemployment, has led to an increased need for counseling. In addition, security expenditures and insurance costs are rising. And families who are dealing with reduced income need scholarship assistance for their children in Jewish preschools and day care, as well as day schools. We also have a growing community of elders and emigres who need help.

Difficult as things are at home, hardly a day goes by without a report of another fatal attack in the Mideast. In the former Soviet Union, elderly Jews are facing hunger. And in Argentina, those who have lived in the middle- and upper-middle class are suddenly destitute.

Yes, it’s an ugly picture, but now is not a time for pessimism. Instead, we need to channel our concerns into tzedakah. That’s why more than 1,000 volunteers will be picking up the phone Sunday to ask for your help.

When you’re called on Super Sunday, give until it feels good. And if you don’t get a call, pick up your phone and make a pledge. You’ll feel better.
