“There’s no other issue students at Berkeley have taken a stand on in such high numbers. And this is not just a random sampling of students. Beyond that, it’s really the leadership of almost every major student organization that has signed on. That’s the Cal Democrats, Berkeley College Republicans and Student Government.”
The brief statement reads, “We, America’s college students, declare our opposition to the terrorism which has plagued Israel for 54 years. We, concerned human beings, share in Israel’s eternal dream for Middle East peace. We Stand With Israel Now, and Forever.”
The petition is part of the IAC’s “Project Invest,” which has so far raised thousands of dollars to purchase Israel Bonds. The project’s success at Berkeley — with the help of its Web site www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~iac — has led to pro-Israel activists launching similar efforts at the University of Florida and Georgetown University.
“Through this we’ve been able to hold pro-Israel conversations with other students and challenge them to really take a stand,” said Singer.
“That’s what the students have done and we want to go out there and double our numbers.”
