JCRC seeks survivors for Holocaust event
Community leaders are looking for all Bay Area Holocaust survivors in order to honor them at a spring luncheon.
“Eyewitnesses to History” will observe the 60th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust. It will be held Sunday, May 15, in San Francisco.
Rosalind Jekowsky, the event coordinator, said about 200 survivors have committed to attend. “Our main goal is to find every survivor of Nazi persecution in the Bay Area and extend an invitation to attend so that we can properly thank the survivors for how they have enriched our community.”
Survivors who have not already received an invitation are asked to contact the Jewish Community Relations Council at (415) 957-1551.
The luncheon is sponsored by the JCRC, the Holocaust Center of Northern California and the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation’s Endowment Fund in cooperation with Jewish Family and Children’s Services.
Gloria Steinem to speak at ‘Power of One’
Gloria Steinem will be the guest speaker at the Women’s Alliance of the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation’s annual “Power of One” event.
Steinem, a noted writer and lecturer and founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus, is considered one of the pioneers of the feminist movement.
Carol Saal of Palo Alto will be the recipient of the Judith Chapman Memorial Women’s Leadership Award.
The event will take place 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 9 at the Hilton San Francisco, 333 O’Farrell St. The dinner is $82 plus a minimum pledge of $365 to the federation’s annual campaign.

Holocaust Center sets grand opening
Though the Holocaust Center of Northern California moved to a new San Francisco home last fall, it is holding its grand opening at 5 p.m. Monday, March 14.
KQED host Michael Krasny will host the reception. Guest speakers will include students who have used the center over the years.
The center, which holds more than 15,000 volumes, is now located in the basement of Jewish Community Federation building on 121 Steuart Street, in space that formerly belonged to the local Jewish museum.
The Holocaust Center is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Information: (415) 777-9060.
Palo Alto students play chess for tsunami
Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School students raised more than $800 for tsunami relief by playing chess.
The Palo Alto day school had 53 students who paid $25 each to compete in the chess tournament held Feb. 6. Except for the cost of the trophies and a few additional expenses, the proceeds will go to help victims of the Dec. 26 tsunami.
AMIT leads Israel trip
The San Francisco chapter of AMIT (Americans for Israel and Torah) announced its first trip to Israel — from March 21 through April 1.
“Touch the Heart of Israel” includes visits to Safed, the Baha’i Gardens in Haifa, the excavations of Caesaria, the open-air market Machaneh Yehuda in Jerusalem and the Dead Sea region. Purim will be celebrated in Jerusalem. Information: (415) 664-6309.
JCF of Silicon Valley celebrates its 75th
Nearly 450 people helped the Jewish Community Federation of Silicon Valley mark its diamond anniversary last month.
The federation used the occasion to honor philanthropist Eli Reinhard, who was presented with the Harold Witkin Humanitarian Award.

Chabad of Mill Valley expands offerings
Chabad of Mill Valley has moved to a new location at 355 Starling Road in Mill Valley.
Chabad also is now having services on the third Saturday of each month, followed by a Kiddush.
