nancy, france (ap) | Vandals toppled or smashed dozens of tombstones at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, city officials said this week.

About 64 of 500 tombstones at the cemetery in the eastern Moselle region were damaged, apparently overnight May 9, officials said.

The incident marked the first time the cemetery in the town of Sarreguemines has been vandalized, though the region has been hit by more serious attacks at other cemeteries. Police were investigating and said there were no immediate indications about who might be responsible.

France has suffered a string of anti-Semitic attacks in recent years, often targeting Jewish cemeteries, community centers and synagogues.
