The Center for Jewish Living and Learning, a program of the Jewish Community Federation of the Greater East Bay, has announced an initiative to support supplemental religious schools, day schools and community high schools in serving students with special needs.

“Koach l’Lamed l’Kulam — The Power to Teach All of Our Children” will be supported by funding from the East Bay federation, and will begin with a special needs conference on Oct. 29 at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette.

The conference, which is open to Jewish educators as well as rabbis, cantors and b’nai mitzvah program providers throughout the Bay Area, will be followed by a series of teacher-training workshops to be held throughout the year.

The Koach l’Lamed l’Kulam conference will feature a keynote address by Dr. David Ackerman, founder of Camp Ramah’s special needs Tikvah program, and director of educational services at the Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles.

Conference workshops will be on topics such as making b’nai mitzvah accessible, supporting special needs families and a multi-sensory approach to teaching Hebrew.

CJLL’s Jewish special education programs are supported by contributions by Elliott and Shelley Fineman and the Daniel King Memorial Endowment of the Jewish Community Foundation of the Greater East Bay.
