Hadassah, Shmaltz sponsor beer event

Tommy’s Joynt restaurant in San Francisco is hosting a beer and book event Thursday, Feb. 19, co-sponsored by Hadassah and the Shmaltz Brewing Co., maker of He’Brew beer.

“Beer and Buffalo Stew: An Evening With Brian Yaeger” will include tales of cross-country travels and observations on the beer industry by Yaeger, a San Francisco resident, former j. staff member and author of “Red, White, and Brew: An American Beer Odyssey.”

Tommy’s Joynt is a family-owned, local institution that has been serving up buffalo stew since 1947. He’Brew was established in 1996 and has since mushroomed into Shmaltz brewing, which produces 11 different beers.

The event is set for 6 to 8 p.m. at Tommy’s Joynt, 1101 Geary Blvd., S.F. The $20 cost includes one bottle of beer and a signed copy of “Red, White, and Brew,” with $5 from each entry going to Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organ-ization of America. (Hadassah members and associates get two free beers each.) For reservations, call (415) 771-5900 or go to www.sanfran.hadassah.org.

Super Sunday volunteers needed
It’s that time of year.

Super Sunday has rolled around again, which means local Jewish community federations will be calling Jews across the Bay Area seeking support. This year, Super Sunday falls on Feb. 22, and volunteers are needed by both the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation and the Jewish Community Federation of the Greater East Bay.

Super Sunday has become a tradition at federations across the country, and often accounts for a significant portion of the annual campaign. Last year’s effort brought in several hundred thousand dollars for local federations.

The Super Sunday Campaign Peninsula Phone-a-Thon runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kehillah Jewish High School, 3900 Fabian Way, Palo Alto. To RSVP call the South Peninsula Region at (650) 919-2100.

The East Bay is making a two-day event of it, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 22 and 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 23. To sign up for a shift, go to jfed.com or call (510) 839-2900.
