j., the Jewish news weekly of Northern California, has won six Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism. Staff writer Stacey Palevsky won four awards for writing, reporting and photography. Art director Cathleen Maclearie won two for graphic design.

The awards were presented at the American Jewish Press Association’s annual conference June 14-17 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

 

Palevsky took first-place awards for excellence in feature writing (newspapers over 15,000 circulation) and excellence in photography for “Spiritual Caregivers,” a story about volunteers who work with Jewish Home residents at the end of their lives.

Her story, “Many Nations, One Tribe,” about an Oakland photojournalist visiting isolated Jewish communities around the globe, also won a first-place award for excellence in arts reporting.

Palevsky won a second-place award for excellence in arts reporting for “Quill and Scroll,” about a female Torah scribe at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.

Maclearie won second place for excellence in overall graphic design (newspapers over 15,000 circulation). She also won second place for excellence in cover design.
