Even toddlers jumped into the act of helping others during the Oshman Family JCC’s Mitzvah Day on Jan. 17 in Palo Alto.

More than 700 volunteers participated in activities that included making cat toys and dog biscuits for homeless animals, picking 1,335 pounds of fruit from local homes and delivering it to the needy and cooking a lasagna dinner for 80 for the Maple Street Homeless Shelter in Redwood City.

Volunteers came from Santa Cruz, the East Bay and places in between, and ranged in age from 2 to 80 years old. The large turnout far surpassed organizers’ expectations for the fourth annual day of volunteering to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
