The Age March, which began in San Francisco last year and was attended by more than 300 people, is gearing up for its second go-around, this time in West Hollywood.
Barbara Rose Brooker, a San Francisco writer and performer who created the march, has said she wants the event to “go global.” It is already the first age march in history, she says.
“I am very excited and am expecting an even larger crowd [than last year],” she adds. “Next is New York, and then Washington, D.C.” She also says another San Francisco march is set for Oct. 1 at Crissy Field.
Brooker says all future marches will adhere to the same principals that inspired the first Age March, a one-mile jaunt at Crissy Field in August 2010: putting an end to age discrimination and segregation, enabling people to celebrate their age instead of hiding it, and inspiring people to pursue their dreams and opportunities at any age.
“Age is not about a number,” says Brooker, 74. “It is about living life to the fullest, asking new questions and always forming new goals. This march is the beginning of the end of old age and marching to a generation of age pride.”
The West Hollywood Age March will start at 9 a.m. May 21 at Plummer Park, near Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. Refreshment and entertainment to be provided. For more information or to sign up, visit www.agemarch.com.
