J. writer Rachel Leibold won a first-place prize in the annual journalism contest sponsored by the American Jewish Press Association.
The 2010 Simon Rockower Awards were presented June 29 at the AJPA’s conference in Dallas. Leibold won the award for excellence in writing about women for her
Oct. 8 story “True confessions: S.F. Cartoon Art Museum showcasing the comics of 18 Jewish women.”
The most awards were won by the Forward, which garnered 13 awards, including nine first-place honors.
In the best website category, the Forward was recognized in the large-circulation division, for newspapers with a circulation above 15,000. The St. Louis Jewish Light won in the small-circulation division. MyJewishLearning.com won first place among web-only publications.
JTA won two first-place prizes in the large-circulation division — one for coverage of immigration to Israel and one for feature writing.
In the large-newspaper division, the Boris Smolar Award for Excellence in Comprehensive Coverage or Investigative Reporting went to Julie Wiener of the New York Jewish Week for “Hebrew Charter Schools Series.” Ellen Futterman and the staff at the St. Louis Jewish Light won in the under-15,000 category for “State of Hate.”
