Jennifer Ani and Michal “Miki” Goralsky — mothers of children at Brandeis Hillel Day School in San Rafael — saved a San Francisco man’s life at a children’s party in Ross, the Marin Independent Journal reported recently.

Subsequently, the mothers are urging other parents to learn CPR, and are working with Brandeis Hillel Day School to set up training sessions.

On Sept. 18, Ani of San Rafael and Goralsky of San Anselmo were at a party for first-graders when Mike Ryan, 51, collapsed in the middle of the festivities. The mothers were able to administer compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation based on techniques they learned as children. Ryan was transported to Marin General Hospital, where he underwent successful quadruple bypass surgery.

The headline in the Marin Independent Journal read “CPR at Ross party saves life of man who had been clinically dead.”

“There’s been such a wonderful, thankful feeling of pride and community among the parents who saw [the rescue] happen,” said Hamutal Gavish, head of the BHDS San Rafael campus. “I think everyone’s feeling very thankful, and realizing the importance of cherishing every moment of every day.”

People interested in attending or helping set up CPR classes at Brandeis Hillel Day School should contact the school at (415) 472-1833.
