Sanford Garelick, New York City’s first Jewish chief inspector, the highest uniformed officer at the time, died Nov. 19 at 93.
Garelick was also a city council president, a mayoral candidate, chief of the transit police and security director for New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
An old friend, Jay Mazur, told the New York Times, “He was a Jewish cop, so nothing human was alien to him.” — jta
