Harvey Allen, Ph.D.
October 12, 1935–April 30, 2012
The family of Harvey Allen announces the passing of a dear man, Harvey Allen, after a brief struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in the midst of the Great Depression to Sylvia and Eli Allen and had little more than his brain and his wits to get him through a difficult childhood. His parents were committed to his education, however, and he earned his undergraduate and later graduate (Psychology) degrees at New York University. He served in the U.S. Army at White Sands Proving Grounds, New Mexico, his first time out of New York and into the West.
He loved discovering everything new in S.F. He loved music. He loved traveling. He loved learning new skills, like baking baguettes for his family. He loved schmoozing with his friends and telling wonderful jokes. He made a great cappuccino. He loved life.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol, his daughters whom he doted on, Jessica Lebe (Tony) of Pleasant Hill and Elana Curry (Jefferson) of San Francisco, and four beautiful grandchildren, Benjamin, Jacob and Zoey Lebe; and Solomon Curry. He was proud of his family and delighted in showering them with gifts. He leaves his nephew Barry (Kathy) Scheiner, niece Hollis Decker, both of Long Island, N.Y., and many cousins scattered throughout the country. His many friends were his extended family.
Harvey Allen, a clinical psychologist for over 40 years, retired from Kaiser Permanente and maintained a private practice until his illness. He cared very deeply about his patients and often felt he learned more from them than they did from him. His professional work and his personal relationships were all of one piece: he was a giving and caring man, in short, a mensch.
Harvey supported many local and national charities. The family is especially grateful to the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center and the Institute on Aging’s Older Adult Care Management program for their compassionate assistance during this last month. Donations to these or other organizations in his name would honor him.

Marc Scherer
Marc Scherer sadly passed on March 23 after a courageous six-month battle with cancer. Devoted father to Sandra (Paul) Navarro; Diana (Gary) Sosnick; grandfather to Jason, Andrew (Mariana) and Jeremy Sosnick. Also survived by his brother Max (Marlene) Scherer; cousin Leon (Eva) Rajninger; nephew Arnold (Christina) Scherer; and nieces Susan (Dennis) McQuaid and Evelyn (Steve) Block, in addition to many grandnieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving companion Joyce Schreier.
Born January 27, 1934 to the late Samuel and Regina in Czernowitz, Rumania. Marc, Max and his parents are Holocaust survivors who escaped WWII Europe and immigrated to San Francisco, where they became U.S. citizens. Growing up in San Francisco, Marc fell in love with swing dancing and jazz music. It was at the Bahia nightclub where he met Marilyn Radner, who became his wife of 33 years until her passing in 1996.
Marc enjoyed life to the fullest. His music, devotion to the N.Y. Yankees, going on cruises, Soul Sauce, his exercise regimen and many years of dinners and dancing at Joe’s of Westlake. He was a devoted member of the Cuneo bakery (known to many as the “cookie man”) for over 40 years.
Family and friends were invited to a cryptside service on Tuesday, March 27 at Salem Memorial Park, Colma. A celebration of Marc’s life was held at Joe’s of Westlake. Marc will be dearly missed by many family and friends.
