It’s not too late to get involved in the JCC Maccabi Games, as roughly 100 four-hour volunteer shifts were still lingering as of this week.

Even with more than 900 volunteers hustling and bustling at all of the athletic sites and other event venues, volunteer coordinator Kelly Bourke said organizers could “definitely use some extra help.”

Open positions include helping with security by providing participants with the appropriate credentials and badges, keeping track of athletes coming in and out of the athletic venues, and helping at several evening events.

Other available jobs include tasks such as helping athletes find the right bus in the Games’ color-coded bus setup.

“We want to ensure the safety of our athletes,” Bourke said. “We’re very grateful for everyone’s support and hope to see everyone at opening ceremonies.”

Due to strict security, the general public can attend only the opening ceremonies, which begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 at the Cow Palace in Daly City.

In keeping with security restrictions, Games organizers have not made public the list of venues or a schedule of athletic contests for the week — either to the media or online — although parents, host families and volunteers will be allowed to attend events as spectators. The closing party and ceremony at AT&T Park will be closed to the public.

On opening night, the public is invited to the Cow Palace to view the parade of athletes, the lighting of the torch, and musical performances by teen artists and Israeli hip hop band Coolooloosh. Parking and admission are free, and although walk-up registration will be available, advance registration is encouraged.

To register for the opening ceremonies or to volunteer, visit www.jccmacreg.org or contact Katie Wallenberg at (415) 422-4510.
