Familial Dysautonomia Prevention and Education Program
F.D. is a progressive and fatal genetic disease found exclusively among Ashkenazi Jews. Its frequency is similar to that of Tay-Sachs. Prospective Jewish parents should be tested at qualified laboratories to determine if they are carriers. When both parents are carriers, there is a 25 percent chance that they will conceive a child with this rare and deadly disease. Carrier testing is now available at Kaiser health centers and other private laboratories.
