He is founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute and a clinical professor of medicine at UCSF Medical Center. He has conducted clinical research for the past 23 years demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease without surgery or drugs. The Maimonides Award will go to Dr. Leonard Shlain, associate professor surgery at UCSF Medical Center and chief of laparoscopic surgery at California Pacific Medical Center. He is the author of "Art and Physics: Parallel Visions in Space," "Time and Light" and "The Alphabet vs. the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image." In addition, Gerald Ornstein, who is Northwest region chairman of the American Committee for Shaare Zedek, will receive the Jerusalem Award for his leadership over the past five years. He is former president of Lake Merced Golf and Country Club, former vice president of Ot Am B'nai B'rith and a current board member of the Hebrew Free Loan Association.
