The Jewish Coalition for Literacy, which helps Bay Area elementary schoolchildren learn to read, has announced a new lineup of training sessions.

JCL recruits, trains, places and supports volunteer reading tutors in local schools and after-school programs in grades K-3; tutors are asked to work just one hour a week with a student. People can register for the three-hour training session at www.jclread.org or by phone.

The Peninsula schedule: 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 at Congregation Etz Chayim (4161 Alma St., Palo Alto) and 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at Congregation Beth Jacob (1550 Alameda de las Pulgas, Redwood City). For information, call (415) 369-9978 ext. 106.
