Hilda Boucher

Passed away peacefully at the Jewish Home in San Francisco, July 31, 2014, age 99. Beloved wife of the late Herbert Boucher for 61 years; loving mother of Dr. Charles Boucher (Rosemarie Boucher) and Dr. Ralph Boucher (Dr. Lise Grondahl Boucher); adoring grandmother of Mattias, André and Soren Boucher; dear sister of Ilse Polak and the late Karl Gumprich and Annie Rosenberg. Born in Germany; Holocaust survivor in Holland detailed in her and Herbert’s memoir “Miracle of Survival”; raised family in New York and enjoyed retirement in Tiburon.

Barbara Ann Markowitz (Necha Esther bat Chaya)

Of Emeryville, Calif., formerly of Sharon, Mass., on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014. Devoted mother of Sarah Markowitz of Glendale, Ariz. Dear sister of David Sudikoff and his wife, Rikki, of Berkeley, Calif. Loving aunt of Eliana and Uriel.

Graveside services were held on Aug. 14 at the Independent Workman’s Circle Cemetery in West Roxbury, Mass. Barbara’s courage to live despite years of debilitating illness was an inspiration to us all.

Charles Pivnick

On Aug. 18, 2014 in San Francisco, following a brief illness, Charles Pivnick passed away at age 95. Charles (“Charlie”) Pivnick was born in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 6, 1919 to Eastern European parents, Jessie and Frank Pivnick. The family relocated to San Francisco when Charlie was 10. He graduated from Commerce High School in 1937.

He served in World War II, completing two tours of duty in the South Pacific. After the war, he opened an Army surplus business in San Francisco. Following that, he opened the first Cable Car Clothiers store on the cable car tracks at Powell and O’Farrell streets and continued his long career as a traditional clothing haberdasher until 2012.

Charlie was an avid sports enthusiast (particularly basketball and tennis). He coached youth basketball and was a sports advocate serving on the San Francisco Jewish Sports Committee. Charlie attended USF at night while running his business. He graduated in 1959 and went on to get his MBA. He was a marathon runner and ran the Bay to Breakers until his 80s.

Charlie was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Janice Schark Pivnick, and daughter Patricia Pivnick Levin. His sister Jeanette and brother Saul also preceded him. He is survived by his daughter, Barrett Pivnick Lucero, granddaughter Hayley Lucero, beloved brother Isadore Pivnick, son-in-law Gary Levin, grandchildren Jonathan (Ariel Schulman) Levin, Marc (Jennifer Landres) Levin, Diana (Evan Ben-Artzi) Levin, and great-grandson Henry Levin, as well as nieces and nephews.

Charlie was beloved by his family and numerous friends and will be greatly missed. Services were held on Aug. 21. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Congregation Beth Sholom of San Francisco or the charity of your choice.

Lottie Rosenthal

Lottie Rosenthal passed away at the age of 85 on Aug. 15 in Peoria, Ariz. Born May 8 in Frankfurt, Germany, she immigrated to the United States in 1938 with her parents, Fred and Bella Rosenthal. She was raised in Napa, Calif., attending Salvador Elementary School and Napa High School. After graduation, she worked for a short time in San Francisco at Joseph Magnin.

In 1950 she traveled to New York City to visit family and in turn met her future husband, George. Married in 1951, they continued in the family business of Rosenthal’s Fresh Ranch Eggs, which later changed to the Rosenthal’s Dried Fruit and Nut business, now known as Napa Nuts.

In 1953, both Lottie and George along with several other families co-founded Congregation Beth Shalom, where she was an active member for over 50 years.

She will be missed by her daughters, Connie (Mark) Lorigan of Surprise, Ariz., Beatrice Eisenberg of Federal Way, Wash., and her granddaughter Jessica (Dan) French, her cousin Joanne Stern and her family Debbie (Mike) Kmiec and Michael (Brenda) Stern, along with many other cousins, nephews and nieces.

Services were held Aug. 19 at Treadway & Wigger, followed by interment at Ner Tamid Cemetery in St. Helena. Please, no flowers. Donations can be made to your favorite charity or Congregation Beth Shalom.
