Alef Bet Judaica will close its doors at the end of June after serving the Silicon Valley Jewish community for the past 23 years. The Los Gatos store specializes in handcrafted merchandise from more than 45 artists in Israel and the United States.

Nurit Sabadosh is closing Alef Bet Judaica at the end of this month.

Owners Nurit and Yuri Sabadosh will retire. She is 70, and he is 72.

“I am looking forward to the third part of my life,” Nurit Sabadosh said. “I was a teacher for 20 years and I’ve had the store for over 20 years. If God gives us long life, my husband and I will enjoy the next part, too.”

Sabadosh said she hadn’t planned to retire this year, but declining sales due to the internet caused her to push up the date. The couple will spend more time “enjoying the family,” which includes six grandchildren, and will travel in the U.S.

“I also have a whole stack of books I want to read, and will visit my mom and my sister in Israel,” Sabadosh said. “Then we’ll see what ideas we have for what’s next.”

Drorit Schwartz, who has worked there for 16 years, said, “It will be sad not to have a Judaica store in the area, but I think we did something good while we were here.”

Merchandise is discounted up to 60 percent, Schwartz said. “People are coming in to buy and also to say ‘goodbye,’ ” she said. “As for me, I’m not retiring, but when one door closes, another opens.” – patricia corriga
