A survey of the best places to work in academia ranked Jerusalem’s Hebrew University as the second-best place to work outside of the United States.

The school ranked ninth overall, according to the Scientist magazine’s annual survey, released this month. It was the only Israeli school among the top 25 in the Scientist magazine rankings, which were based on answers to a survey submitted by more than 1,000 researchers in the life sciences.

“This demonstrates that a community in which it is pleasant to work is also one in which one sees outstanding academic achievements,” Hebrew University President Menachem Ben-Sasson said, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The J. David Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco came in first.

The survey named Hebrew U.’s “strengths” as tenure and promotion, management and policies. The university has 1,084 life sciences researchers.

Finishing ahead of Hebrew U. among non-U.S. instituttions and ranking fourth overall was the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
