Flying Falafel will open in San Francisco’s Castro district some time next year, after a failed effort by a competitor to derail it.
The owner of Gyro Xpress, one of three existing falafel shops on the 400 block of Castro Street, wrote to the S.F. Planning Commission to argue that there shouldn’t be another, Eater SF reported. The commission narrowly voted against reviewing the Flying Falafel permit, allowing owner Assaf Pashut to move forward on his plan to open at 463 Castro St.
That will make a total of four Flying Falafels: the original in the Mid-Market area, another set to open at 211 Sutter St., and a kosher restaurant in downtown Berkeley. Last year, Pashut told J. that he hopes to turn his brand into the first national vegan fast-food chain.
