Dubbed “The Harlem of the West,” the neighborhood was characterized by jazz clubs, black churches and black-owned businesses, which were systematically undone in the name of urban renewal.

The series’ producer Peter Stein will produce and write the documentary, with longtime Bay Area videographer Rick Butler serving as director. “The Fillmore” is scheduled to premiere in August.

While a number of historians, archivists and Bay Area universities and libraries are contributing to the research and development of the project, KQED is turning to the public to participate. Individuals with Fillmore memorabilia are invited to call (415) 553-2850.
