Hodes’ work has included safeguarding the well-being of Ethiopian Jews. He participated in Operation Solomon, the massive airlift in May 1991 of more than 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Tel Aviv in 36 hours.

In the summer of 1994, in response to the crisis in Rwanda, he headed the JDC medical team at the Kibumba Refugee Camp in Zaire, where he set up a hospital and was responsible for saving thousands of lives.

Dr. Hodes, a native of Long Island, N.Y., attended Middlebury College and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
