Sing-along concert benefits Temple Sinai programs
Oakland’s Temple Sinai will host a “Poets of Tin Pan Alley Sing-Along Concert,” a sing-along musical fund-raiser supporting community programs organized by the congregation’s men’s club. The songs of Cole Porter will be on the Jan. 10 program.
Lyrics will be projected on a screen so participants can join in on songs like “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Night and Day,” “I Love Paris” and many more. Piano accompaniment will be provided to keep everyone on key.
The event takes place 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Temple Sinai sanctuary (entrance on 28th Street between Webster and Summit) in Oakland. Tickets: $12.50. For information, call Phil Rubin or Laurie Leiber, (510) 547-8080.
Israeli film opens in Bay Area
“Antarctica,” a film that examines the lives of gay and lesbian Israelis living in Tel Aviv, opens today in Bay Area theaters.
Written and directed by Israeli filmmaker Yair Hochner, “Antarctica” originally screened in June as part of Frameline32, the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.
Described by Hochner as a light romantic comedy, the movie follows a librarian, journalist, boutique manager and a couple of dancers to illustrate the integration of gays into mainstream Israeli life.
The film opens Friday, Jan. 2 for a one-week run at the Lumiere Theatre, 1572 California St., San Francisco, and Shattuck Cinemas, 2230 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley.
