In 1985, after seeing a play about the AIDS crisis, photographer Robert Giard decided to use his craft to capture images of gay and lesbian writers. Over the next 17 years, he went on to take nearly 600 black-and-white photos of gay literary figures.

A selection those photographs is now on display at the JCC of San Francisco in the exhibit “Particular Voices: Portraits of Gay and Lesbian Jewish Writers.” The exhibit opened this week in the JCC’s Katz Snyder Gallery and will run through Feb. 28. Admission is free.

The display features images of iconic Jewish literary figures such as Allen Ginsberg, Tony Kushner and Adrienne Rich — all taken by Giard, who died in 2002 at age 62. More than 180 of his pictures were included in the 1997 book “Particular Voices.”

The JCCSF is located at 3200 California St., S.F. For more information, visit www.jccsf.org.
