Two local Jewish groups are taking part in a national week of action, starting Sunday, Sept. 18, designed to heighten awareness of hate-based violence and suggest ways communities can prevent it.

The initiative is focused on screenings of the documentary “Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness,” about the 2008 killing of an immigrant worker by seven teenagers in Patchogue, N.Y.

The film, made by Oakland’s The Working Group, will air nationwide on PBS stations at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 and repeat through Sept. 25. Key national partners include the Anti-Defamation League and Hillel.

Temple Sinai in Oakland screened the film Sept. 8 and Hillel of Silicon Valley at San Jose State has scheduled a showing for Tuesday, Sept. 20.

“Jewish organizations and individuals are involved in this campaign because Jews care about this key civil rights issue, and many are interested in forging stronger relations with the Hispanic community,” said Not in Our Town executive director Jonathan Bernstein. “Speaking out against hatred will motivate others to condemn anti-Semitism in the future.”
