Several Bay Area congregations of various denominations will team up for a communitywide Tisha B’Av commemoration in San Francisco. The event takes place at 7 p.m. July 28 at Congregation B’nai Emunah. The commemoration of the holiday begins with a dairy potluck, followed by Havdallah and a candlelight chanting from the Book of Lamentations. Tisha B’Av is a fast day commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples, both on the ninth of Av, at the hands of the Babylonians and Romans. The eight Bay Area communities joining together are Beth Israel Judea, Beth Sholom, B’nai Emunah, Ner Tamid, Coastside Torah Circle, Kehillah San Francisco, Or Shalom Jewish Community and the West Bay Chavurah.
