Irving H. Canter

Dec. 17, 1920 – April 24, 2014

Native of Pittsburgh, Pa.; resident of the Reutlinger Community in Danville since 2006. Predeceased by his wife, Louise Canter, in 1997. Survived by two children, Bob (Lance) of Martinez and daughter Cathy Glassman (late Louis Glassman) of Coral Springs, Fla., and three grandchildren: Mitchell Canter of Santa Clara, Beth Sasson and (Gal Sasson) of Tel Aviv, and Douglas Glassman of Coral Springs, Fla. Also survived by a sister, Miriam Breslow (Arnold), of Greentree, Pa. Veteran, United States Navy, 1942-1946. Burial was held at Gan Shalom Cemetery in Briones.

 

Alan Sanford Goldstein

Born January 16, 1939, died May 3, 2014.

Former KRON news director, NBC Nightly News field producer, journalism educator, and exemplary contributor to the golden age of television news. Son of Irvin and Izela Goldstein; brother of Ron Goldstein; father of Jason (Dalita) Goldstein, Kimberly (Edward) McGrady and Adam Goldstein; grandfather of Jackson Goldstein and Aidan McGrady; husband of Hadassah Goldstein. Services were held at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery on May 6.

Alice (Bloom Berkowitz Kohn) Jaye

Passed away on April 30, 2014 surrounded by Alice’s beloved family, her devoted son Richard Berkowitz and her daughter-in-law Mary, her beloved grandchildren Scott Berkowitz and Kim O’Keefe, Kevin and Mirit Berkowitz, and the light of her life, her great granddaughter Malina Berkowitz, who brought her so much joy this past year, as well as her nieces and nephews who lovingly were with her to the end.

Alice was born Alice Bloom on April 1, 1923 to Simon and Katie Kalin Bloom in San Francisco. Her beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Abe Stolowitz, Evelyn and Harry Abramovitz, and Abe Gilbert, preceded her in death, as well as her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Sylvia and Louis Zimmerman and Rae and Phil Garfinkle.

Alice married Robert Berkowitz in 1943, and her beloved son Richard Berkowitz was born in 1945. The marriage ended in divorce, and in 1954 Alice married Julius Kohn, whom she survived. They had one son, Mark Lewis Kohn, in 1955, who passed away of Tay-Sachs disease at age 3 in 1958 .

Alice married Herman(Hy) Jaye in 1988, whom she also survived.

Alice’s adored family included many devoted nieces and nephews: Sandra and David Monasch, Ronald and Suzanne Stolowitz, Karen and Steven Sager, Paul Abramovitz, Gary and Kathy Zimmerman, Bruce and Laura Zimmerman, and JoAnne Zimmerman, as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Alice loved dancing, baseball, cards, friendships, and most of all, her family was everything to her. A special thank you to her dear care-giver, Linda Rogers, for whom we are all

David Leash

Passed away in San Francisco on April 20, 2014 at the age of 77 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Services were held April 24, at Home of Peace in Colma.

David was born in Detroit and studied at Lawrence Institute of Technology and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Upon graduation, he moved to San Francisco, where he began practicing as a licensed architect. He met his wife, Judy, and they raised their daughter, Elana, within a tight-knit community of Noe Valley friends. One of his true passions was painting with bleach, using a special technique he developed. He was an active participant in Congregation Beth Sholom and studied Hebrew and Yiddish with a deep passion. Along with his wife and other individuals with Parkinson’s disease, he helped start a nonprofit, PDSF Network, which sponsors activities for people with Parkinson’s.

Remembered as a very learned man and kind soul, he will be greatly missed. He is survived by wife Judy, daughter Elana and granddaughter Reyna, as well as sister Lillian, and brothers Aaron, Leon and Mikhail.

Sue Rayner Warburg

In San Francisco on April 25, 2014 at age 83. Beloved wife of Felix Warburg for 47 years; loving mother of Matthew Warburg and mother-in-law of Maggie Jiang; dear cousin of John and Dora Stix and Jane and Bill Buchsbaum.

Sue Rosenthal was born in New York City on June 12, 1930, the daughter of Ethel Frank and Paul Rosenthal, and the grand-daughter of Betty Spiegelberg. Raised in New York City, she graduated from Bennington College in 1952 and later earned an M.A. in English literature from San Francisco State. Married and later divorced from James Morrison, she married Felix Warburg in 1966 and gave birth to their only child, Matthew, in 1969.

Active in many Jewish organizations and groups, Sue had a passion for researching Jewish history, and in the early 1980s founded San Francisco Jewish Landmarks Tours along with her husband Felix, which led tours about Jewish History in Northern California, Santa Fe, the Southeastern United States, Pittsburgh, and France. Along with her husband Felix, she developed and curated the exhibit “Pioneer Jews of New Mexico,” which ran at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe from 2000-2005. Among her many other occupations were actress, model, dancer, teacher and publicist, and she had a passion for travel, reading, hiking, good movies, good food and above all, good company.

A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Guild Hall of Temple Emanu-El. In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Council of Jewish Women would be kindly appreciated.
