More than 200 people filled San Francisco’s 111 Minna Gallery Oct. 22 for Bend the Arc’s “Pursuing Justice” party, celebrating progressive issues in the run-up to the Nov. 4 midterm elections.
With Game 2 of the World Series showing in the background, state Sen. Mark Leno spoke passionately about the importance of the progressive agenda and passing Proposition 47 in California. Prop. 47 would reclassify certain nonviolent felonies as misdemeanors in order to decrease the incarceration rate and prevent more minor crimes from permanently blackening offenders’ records.
“Proposition 47 is such a historic opportunity to right some of the problems we’re seeing in California,” said Susan Lubeck, Bend the Arc’s Bay Area regional director.
Stosh Cutler, Bend the Arc’s CEO, also spoke about the Jewish obligation to fight for justice. Bend the Arc is a nonprofit that seeks to engage the Jewish community in the social justice movement. — drew himmelstein
