Twenty-one Bay Area schools will participate in an Anti-Defamation League program to combat bias, bullying and hate during the current school year.
“No Place for Hate” is a national initiative in more than 1,500 schools and communities that encourages students, educators, administrators and parents to create safe school environments. The program was started in 1999 but launched in the Bay Area this year.
Participating schools must implement at least three programs that encourage discussion around respecting differences in the school community.
“Our goal is to make the entire district ‘No Place for Hate,’ ” Wendell Greer said in a statement. He is the associate superintendent of the West Contra Costa Unified School District, which has 15 schools participating in the program. “This is a cornerstone for our community.”
The other six schools in the program are located in East Palo Alto, San Jose, San Francisco, San Rafael, San Carlos and Elk Grove.
