No, not the American pop-rock sister act called Haim, but the Israeli siblings Tair, Liron and Tagel. The official release of their music video “Habib Galbi” has propelled them to celebrity status throughout parts of Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The French media outlet Clique featured the music video as “clip of the day.” The sisters front A-WA (meaning “yes” in Arabic), a band that mixes traditional Yemenite folk songs with modern electronic grooves. “We wanted to give our roots a modern revamp,” Tair Haim told Agenda magazine. Their music features hip-hop beats layered on Yemenite melodies. A-WA, which includes four backup musicians, formed in 2011. And though the sisters have been uploading YouTube videos all along, it wasn’t until they put up a professionally made video with gorgeous cinematography with their first single on March 7, that they went viral across social media — and political boundaries.
