AJC is the global advocate for Jewish communities worldwide. For more than 100 years, the American Jewish Committee has worked to enhance the well-being of the Jewish people and Israel, and advanced democratic values around the globe. In 1949 AJC was the first American Jewish organization to open an office in Jerusalem. Since then we have established a widespread international presence: from Singapore to Sao Paulo, from Mumbai to Paris.
In the United States, AJC’s 22 regional offices build important alliances across diverse ethnic and religious groups. They also advocate for domestic policies and legislation that advance Israel’s security and promote human rights. Additionally, AJC was an early proponent for energy independence. AJC members travel the world, connecting with foreign diplomats at the highest level and leveraging strong relationships with global leaders.
Locally, AJC’s San Francisco regional office has met with nearly every diplomat in the Bay Area, and enjoys close working relationships and partnerships with many of these countries. In July, AJC hosted a special presentation at the Chinese Consulate on the parallels between the American-Jewish and the Chinese-American immigrant experiences.
ACCESS, AJC’s new generation program, empowers young professionals to engage with today’s critical domestic and international issues. Earlier this year, ACCESS had the pleasure of hosting three special dinners with the Consuls General of Italy, Azerbaijan and Portugal.
On Dec. 10, AJC will honor a longtime board member, S. Douglas Weil, with the Distinguished Leadership Award for his 50-plus years of service and dedication to our mission in Cleveland, Boston and now in San Francisco. Additionally, we will honor the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany Peter Franz Josef Rothen with the International Human Relations Award for his outstanding outreach to and support of the San Francisco Jewish community.
