Ruth Annette Grossman

2/22/22–11/15/14

Ruth passed away on Nov. 15 as a result of complications from a fall. She was born in San Francisco, attended Lowell High School, and after a year at U.C. Berkeley she married Donald Grossman. Her parents, David and Anne Lerer, and her husband, Donald, to whom she was married for over 55 years, predeceased her. Ruth lived life to the fullest and was “one-of-a-kind.”

She was a wonderful hostess, loved to be with family and friends and was notoriously generous. She was a Giants fan, loved reading and going to the movies. Her main pastime in recent years was playing canasta and mah jongg and being with her many friends. But her family came first.

She was a loving and adored mother, sister, aunt and friend to many. She is survived by her cherished sons Robert (Wendy) Grossman and Gary (Judy) Grossman. The greatest joy of her life was her grandson Daniel. Ruth will be greatly missed by her sister June Levy and her childhood “buddy” Barbara Johnson.

Numerous family members, in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends will remember her dry sense of humor and her generous and inclusive nature and her fabulous style.

Services were private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth’s memory are welcome to Athletic Scholars Advancement Program (ASAP), 3750 18th St., S.F., CA 94114; S.F. Hillel, 33 Banbury Drive, S.F., CA 94132; or to the charity of your choice.

Jerry Samuel

Jerry Samuel passed away peacefully at home in San Francisco on Nov. 19, 2014 at the young age of 101. He was devoted to his wife, Gert, and his loving family.

Jerry had a contagious smile. His greatest joy was entertaining people when he “tickled the ivories.” He loved playing the piano and accompanying anyone who wanted to sing.

Jerry was born in Turlock, California, and graduated from Lowell High School. He graduated from USF, where he was an all-city tennis champion. He was intelligent and creative. Jerry never met anyone he didn’t like.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gertrude Harris Samuel. He was married to his first wife of 29 years, Lillian, who passed away in 1970. Jerry is also survived by his children Jerilyn Paley (husband Art), and David Samuel; granddaughters Wendy Frank (Ben) and Stephanie Rabinowitz, and great-grandchildren Leah, Shoshana and Dalya Frank, and Mia Rabinowitz and Dylan Sklar.

Jerry is also survived by his extended family — children Diane Kamrin (Terry) and Michael Harris (Dawn), grandchildren Kacey Kamrin (Brian Brown), Ken Kamrin (Jenny), Matt Harris, Dan Harris (Jamie) and great-grandchildren Colin and Clarissa Brown and Ezra Harris. He is also survived by Art’s children Nicole Paley and Marc Paley (Robin) and grandchildren Hannah and Ben Paley.

The family wishes to thank Gemma Marques, his devoted caregiver, as well as Sutter Health Hospice.

Services were held on Nov. 21 at Home of Peace Cemetery Chapel, Colma, with burial following at Salem Memorial Park, Colma.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Sutter Health Hospice or St. Mary’s Hospital, San Francisco.
