The American Jewish World Service and its president, Ruth Messinger, will host a screening and discussion of “Girl Rising,” a film that highlights the challenges of girls in the developing world, at the Osher Marin JCC on Dec. 7.

“Girl Rising” tells the story of nine girls in the developing world who stand up for their right to an education.

“The American Jewish World Service has made the education of girls and young women a priority,” said Alon Shalev, regional executive director for AJWS.

According to AJWS, which supports efforts to end child marriage, 10 million girls become child brides a year.

“They’re not going to school, they’re not getting an education or a profession,” Shalev said. “They’re really at the whim of their husband and their husband’s family.”

Nahid Angha, founder of the International Sufi Women Organization, and Manisha Gupte, co-founder of a women’s rights organization in India, will join Messinger for a panel discussion after the film.

The screening and discussion takes place from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Osher Marin JCC, 200 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael. For information, contact Erica Hymen at [email protected].
