Jewish creators and writers fared well at this year’s Emmys, as “Modern Family,” “Mad Men” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” came away with awards on Sept 18.
“Modern Family,” co-created by Steven Levitan, dominated in the comedy categories, including Emmys for outstanding series, outstanding writing and best supporting actor and actress. “Mad Men,” created by Matt Weiner, won outstanding drama series for the fourth consecutive year.
“The Daily Show” won for outstanding variety, music or comedy series for the ninth year in a row.
Leonard Nimoy, the Jewish actor best known for his portrayal of Spock on “Star Trek,” performed in an opening skit.
Actor Charlie Sheen said he was speaking from “the bottom of my heart” in wishing the best to his former colleagues on “Two and a Half Men.” He was fired from the CBS sitcom following a rant against its Jewish executive producer and co-creator, Chuck Lorre, in which he derogatorily called him “Chaim.”
The Jewish Journal of Los Angeles said Sheen’s message was notable for its lack of “a single offensive slur.” “Casual anti-Semitism gave way to contrition.” — jta
